  The key to cleaning the condenser of industrial chillers is to pay attention to: the inlet and outlet water temperatures of chilled water, the inlet and outlet water temperatures of cooling water, condensation pressure, and evaporation pressure. We can calculate the end temperature difference and convert the condensation pressure and evaporation pressure into the corresponding condensation saturation temperature and evaporation saturation temperature. If the condensation temperature and evaporation temperature can be queried on the touch screen, this value is the corresponding condensation saturation temperature and evaporation saturation temperature. As follows:

  If the calculated end temperature difference is greater than 5 ℃, it can be preliminarily determined that the heat exchanger has scaling. When the end temperature difference is greater than 7 ℃, severe scaling occurs.

  For example, the temperature difference at the condensation end is 36 ℃ -32.3 ℃=3.7 ℃, and the temperature difference at the evaporation end is 12.1 ℃ -9.7 ℃=2.4 ℃. It can be seen that the temperature difference at the condensation end and the evaporation end are both small, and the heat transfer effect of the shell and tube is good, with basically no scaling.

  In addition, you can also check the color of the condenser copper tube. If the original color of the copper tube is no longer visible, the scaling is already severe and needs to be cleaned in a timely manner.

  Main methods and operations for condenser cleaning

  There are three main methods for removing scale from industrial chiller condensers:

  Mechanical descaling method

  Chemical acid cleaning and descaling method

  Electronic magnetic water descaling method

  Below we will introduce these three cleaning and descaling methods.

  1. Mechanical descaling:

  Mechanical descaling is the use of a flexible shaft tube washerto descale the condenser used for cooling pipes, suitable for vertical shell and tube condensers.

  Principle and method of flexible shaft pipe washer:

  The umbrella shaped gear shaped scraper connected to the flexible shaft pipe washer rotates and rolls to remove dirt from the vertical pipe of the condenser from top to bottom, and uses circulating cooling water to cool the heat generated by the friction between the scraper and the pipe wall. At the same time, the cleaned dirt such as scale and rust is washed into the water tank.

  During the descaling process, attention should be paid to determining the appropriate diameter of the roller blade based on the thickness of the condenser’s scaling and the degree of corrosion on the pipe wall, as well as the length of service life. The diameter of the roller blade used for the first descaling process should be slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the cooling pipe to prevent damage to the pipe wall. Then, a roller blade close to the inner diameter of the cooling pipe should be selected for the second descaling process.

  2. Chemical acid cleaning and descaling:

  The chemical acid cleaning method is suitable for vertical and horizontal shell and tube condensers (steel pipes). The normal operation of the condenser must be stopped during the descaling process to ensure safety.

  Principles and methods of chemical acid cleaning for scale removal:

  Clean the condenser with a prepared weakly acidic scale remover to remove scale.

  Close the inlet valve, outlet valve, balance pipe valve, mixed gas valve, oil drain valve and other valves on the condenser, and stop the operation of the condenser cooling water pump.

  Prepare a descaling solution in the pickling tank, start the pickling pump, and circulate the descaling agent solution in the condenser’s condenser tube for 24 hours. Check for scale detachment before determining whether to continue cleaning. Generally, the scale is basically cleared after 24 hours. After stopping the acid cleaning pump, repeatedly clean the remaining detergent solution in the pipe with clean water until it is completely clean.
